Rising Swing Gates

What is a Rising Gate?

If you want a swinging driveway gate that opens into a property but the driveway slopes up from the road then the gate can be made to rise or lift as it opens.

This can be done by offsetting the bottom hinge with a custom made mounting bracket so when closed the gate is straight up and down (plumb) so looks the same as any other swing gate but when open is on an angle to match the slope of the driveway.

calculating gate rise

The amount of offset required to get a particular rise can be calculated with:

Offset = Gate Height / Gate width x Rise

Adjustable Rising Gate Hinge

Consisting of 'off the self' Ball Bearing Hinges that bolt onto custom made mounting brackets on the gate and post allowing different amounts of rise to be set with different gate and post designs.  The hinges are fitted at an angle perpendicular to the slope of the driveway so the gate opens freely.

Rising Gate Space

A draw back of a rising gate is it does kick in as it opens and the more it rises the more it kicks in, taking up valuable driveway space.  If there is room the gate may be installed on the back of the post giving you full clearance between the posts.  This can be factored into the gate design although can add significantly to the cost of the gate because strong mounting brackets are needed to make this possible.

Calculating Motor Size for Rising Gates

The motor used for a rising gate must be larger than if it wasn't rising because the motor must lift a portion of the gates weight.  Gate motors are rated for the maximum width of gate if the height is only 1.2m and infill something like vertical tubing that can let the wind blow through.  The maximum width is reduced if the gate is higher and/or if the infill doesn't let the wind blow through.  For rising gates the maximum width is reduce further depending on the amount of rise and weight of the gate as follows:

For gates that are 1.2m high and are made of a light weight aluminium frame with vertical tubing the maximum width of a gate reduces by 300mm for every 100mm of rise.

For gates 1.8m high that have an aluminium frame with either 15mm thick pine timber pickets, aluminium slats or metal sheeting for infill the maximum width of gate reduces by 600mm for every 100mm of rise.

For gates 1.2m high with steel frame and vertical tubing for infill or aluminium frame with hardwood infill the maximum width of gate reduces by 900mm for every 100mm rise.

This is all based on the motor providing its rated amount of use.  If the motor is rated for an average use of 40 cycles a day and its for a single home that only gets 10 cycles per day then the gate can be  10% wider.

Slope across verses Rise

If your driveway has a slope across and up from the road then a single swing gate hinged from the lowest side will required the bottom rail angled to fit the slope across the driveway (raked), which can offset the amount of rise required to allow for slope up the driveway, some time this can eliminate the need for rising hinges altogether.
