Open and Close Limits: Uses built in hard stops that can be adjusted to set the open and close limit.

Locking the Gate

If a swing gate is less than 2.5m wide then generally the motor will hold it well enough to lock the gate.  Any wider than 2.5m and the flex in the frame will allow the very end of the gate to be pushed open a little, maybe even enough for someone to squeeze through so a magnetic electric lock is recommended.

Maintenance Requirements

Open worm drive motors need very little maintenance although it is a good idea to check under the motor at the worm drive to see if it is clean annually. If contaminated with dirt this will need to be cleaned and new grease applied. This would normally only happen if the motor is down low near a gravel driveway. Operate the gate and listen for noisy bearings too that may need replacing and check that the manual release works.

To clean the worm drive, replace bearings and lubricate the manual release components the motor will need to be pulled apart, which is easily done by removing the screws from under the motor. The worm drive needs to be cleaned down with thinners and a small amount of marine grease applied to the worm. If bearings need replacing this can be done at the same time. If the manual release is not working it may need lubricating.

The control box should also be checked for ants or other small vermin inside. Ants and any droppings should be cleaned out, holes where they could get in sealed up with silicon sealer and repellent placed in or around the control box.

If the operator has a battery back up then turn the power off to the gate and operate it from the battery. If it runs slowly, stops or reverses when it shouldn't then replace the battery back up.

Mounting Brackets.

Because swing gates vary quite a bit there is no "one bracket that fits all" for installing the motor, even the so called 'adjustable' brackets that are available with some motors that 'require no welding' don't fit the gate all that well most of the time and don't look too good either. The King Jet from the factory comes with pre-made mounting brackets, although these will work properly only with gates set flush with the back of a wide brick or concrete block post with the intention that the installer can modify them as needed to suit a particular gate..

We at Grant's Automation understand that this is a little too much to ask the average installer as the setup of the mounting brackets isn't all that straight forward, let alone having to weld them together, so we have come up with some standard designs that will work with the most common gate layouts found in Australia and New Zealand. These designs can be found in the listings of parts that come with each worm drive swing gate motor kit. You can either choose one of these bracket options with the motor order and it will be welded up for you, zinc plated and be included with the motor ready to bolt or screw on and will just work, although this may add a week or so to the delivery time OR you can not include these brackets in the order and you will get the tongues only so you can make your own brackets straight away and the way you want. Grant's Automation's Mounting bracket designs are copyrighted so you cannot make these without written permission from Grant's Automation.

If you can't find a set of brackets that suits your gate then feel free to send us an enquiry as we can quote for the custom design and manufacture of mounting brackets specifically for your gate with details supplied by you. All brackets are welded, dressed and zinc plated so they won't rust and will look nice. With 30 years experience installing gate motors and using the latest 3D computer design tools, the brackets we design are tested with a virtual simulation of a gate in a computer before anything is made, so the installer can be rest assured that the brackets will get the best performance out of the motor and make it last as long as possible. We know more about fitting gate motors than the manufacturers because we've installed gazillions of them over the years and are fussy about they way they work.

King G8 Control Box for 240V Swing Gates

Download Control Box Install Manual

Power Options

The G8 Control Box plugs into a normal 240V power point at the gate or your electrician can hard wire it to mains power. If getting 240V mains power to your gate is difficult you can remove the transformer and put it in a separate weather proof box so you can plug it in at the house (or where ever a power point is available) and run a low voltage cable out to the gate. You can install low voltage cable yourself, you don't need to be a registered electrician.

Has the option of battery backup built into the control box so the operator continues to work in case of power failure and reduces the size of low voltage power cabling required if used.

Features:

Adjustable Motor Speed from 1/3rd to full.

Soft Start and Stop can adjust the point where the slow down starts separately for open and close.

Optional Battery Back up in case power fails motor will continue to work.

Obstruction detection the gate will stop and reverse if it is obstructed by anything with variable level of sensitivity.

Four modes of operation including:

  • Auto-close - gate is opened by remote control and will close automatically after a time delay ( 1s to 90s) or by pressing remote control button
  • Step by Step - while gate is opening, pressing the remote control will stop it part way, pressing again will close it.
  • Condominium - remote control opens gate only with auto-close, which is for when there are many users because if more than one user is trying to open the gate at the same time one could open and the other start closing it without realising it so if it can open only then there is no confusion.
  • Reverse - same as step by step except while gate is opening, pressing the remote control will reverse the gate to close, not stop.

Built in Remote Control Receiver compatible with all King Remote Controls and Wireless Keypads

Adjustable Leaf Delay - for double gates a delay between the opening and closing of each leaf (side) is necessary for safety and when an overlapping stop is used between the gates and if the driveway is at an angle it is useful to be able to adjust the delay longer to make sure the correct gate closes first and opens last. Delay can be set to between 0 and 15 seconds.

Safety Photocell (Photo Electric Beam) facility to prevent the gate closing on a vehicle. The photocell can be used to close the gate immediately after a vehicle has passed through the gate. A photocell can be used to prevent the gate from opening onto a vehicle too.

... more about Safety Photocells

Pedestrian opening facility opens one side fully to let people on foot in only no vehicles. The same button closes the gate. Input is either from a remote control button or device connected to a wired input.

Hazard Light facility is either flashing or steady whenever gate is operating. Is a 12VDC output that can be used to activate a 240V relay (relay not included). There is a small delay between when the gate is activated and when it starts moving to allow for a pre-warning by the hazard light.

Electric Lock output for 12/24V locks, either strike locks or magnetic lock or can be used for a courtesy light.

Easy programming using switches, buttons and potentiometers

Remote control buttons can be programmed to open the gate fully or pedestrian entry.

How this operator kit compares to others?

The thing that stands out most with King Jet is its value for money compared to other Italian made brands of similar size and quality. It is also quite fast opening at 8s to 10s compared to other brands. King control units are relatively easy to program if the manual is followed carefully although don't have an intuitive LCD display like the Centsys Operators nor can they adjust as many parameters.

This style of swing gate motor is best suited to Outward Opening Gates OR Inward Opening Gates with hinges set either flush with the back of the post or within 140mm from the back of the post, any more than this and this motor simply won't work, what is needed is a longer stroke worm drive or articulated arm motor. Open worm drive motors in general are also limited to a maximum of 115o opening angle, for a wider opening angles a longer stroke piston worm drive motor such as the King Linear or Centsys Vantage are more suitable.

King operators differ from Centsys in that they don't run off a battery and are 24V rather than 12V so the low voltage option runs off low voltage power from the house directly or where ever it is plugged in. The good thing with this is you get the advantage of low voltage power yet never need to worry about replacing the battery as the batteries generally only last 3 to 5 years depending on use. The disadvantage of this is how ever is the low voltage cabling does need to be heavier duty than that used for trickle charge power required by the Centsys operators, although 4mm2 garden lighting, TPS or solar cable isn't too expensive so this isn't too bad and the King motors do have the option of a battery backup that does reduce the low voltage power cable size too as the battery backup compensates for any voltage drop in the low voltage cable.

The only other differences are the King Operators don't use an encoder for setting the open and close limits, they use hard stops, so the soft stop is time base based, which isn't as accurate as the Centsys operator that have an encoder. The plus side of this is the King Operators only require a 2-core cable across the driveway for the second motor on double gates, whereas the Centsys motors require 6 cores.
