MB-2-360 - Most Versatile Mounting Brackets for Inward Opening Gates
Making the installation of worm drive swing gate motors easier and looking good.
Suitable for:
Inward Opening Gates set in the middle of a narrow steel or timber post or up to 100mm from the back of a larger brick or concrete post using King Jet Swing Gate Motors. The hinges with this style of gate would normally be Trunnion and Gudgeon.
What's in the Box
Gate Mounting Bracket (GMB) that can be bolted to aluminium or timber gates or self drilling screws can be used for steel framed gates.
Post Mounting Bracket (PMB) that is fitted hard up against the hinge edge of the post and will open the gate to 90o allowing 170mm space behind a gate that opens against a fence or wall. With 100mm square posts if the hinge is far enough off the post to allow the gate to open more than 90o you can move the bracket along the post making the X-Dim larger to increase the opening angle up to 105o, although the X-Dim cannot be more than 170mm for this situation. To get wider opening angles the gate will need to be closer to the back of the post.
Both brackets are made from zinc plated steel.
The way it works
When the gate is operated there is a geared electric motor that turns a 'worm' or 'acme screw' as the engineers like to call it that drives a nut in a straight line or 'linear' direction. This nut then connects to the gate mounting bracket (GMB) to either pull the gate open or push it closed (vise versa for outward opening gates). The amount the nut can travel is called the stroke.
The point where the motor mounts onto the Post Mounting Bracket (PMB) is critical to the way the motor works, it must be offset from a line between the hinge and where the motor fits onto the gate (the Gate Line) before the gate will move. The larger the offset the better the motor will hold the gate when closed and the more force it can apply to the gate. The offset must be maintained throughout the whole opening cycle, which is determined by a number of factors including: the stroke, opening angle of the gate, length of the GMB, positioning of the gate relative to the hinge etc...
The MB-2-360 mounting brackets have been designed to get the most out of gates set in the middle of a post from 100-200mm or wider post with the gate no more than 100mm from the back of a post - using a motor with a 360mm stroke with an opening angle of 90o.
This PMB has been designed to
Use the full stroke of the motor to provide the maximum amount of force possible with this motor on on gates set 100mm from the back of a post throughout the whole open cycle. For gates 50mm from the back of a post they will open 10% faster because this PMB doesn't use the full stroke of the motor. If the gate is set flush with the back of the post the gate can be made to go 20% fast because even less of the stroke is used, although this also reduces the maximum gate width that can be used with this motor
For wider Opening Angles
The gate must be fitted flush with the back of the post for an opening angle larger than 90o, which makes the Y-Dim smaller and the X-Dim larger to increase the opening angle. The X-Dim cannot be any more than 179mm otherwise the cover for the motor will clash with the gate, use the hard stops built into the motor to set the exact angle up to 115o. For gates hung from a 100mm square post wider opening angles will cause the PMB to be off the edge of the post so will need some other form of support such as an extra post fitted next to it or a custom made mounting. Once again this is only recommended for gates less then the maximum recommended width for the motor.
For Larger Posts
If fitting to core filled brick or concrete post the PMB can be flipped horizontally so the mounting holes in the base plate line up with the concrete core for a good strong fixing and allows the gate to be set further forward from the back of the post up to a maximum of 140mm. This also improves the ability of the motor to hold the gate when closed making it less likely that an electric lock is needed..
The holes in the base plate can be drilled out to 20mm diameter to allow for fixings large enough to reach into the concrete core.
If the gate is to be 120mm from the back of the post then the X-Dim = 129mm
If the gate is to be 100mm from the back of the post then the X-Dim = 146mm
The gate will run faster near the open position, if the gate is 140mm from the back of the post, so there may need to be a rubber buffer installed as a hard stop in the open position of the gate.
