Networking and PoE

The latest Intercoms, Surveillance Cameras and Gate Controls use WiFi, 4G or Network Cable to connect to each other rather than conventional analogue cabling and are powered either with 12V from a Power adaptor or if using a Network Cable, power can be injected into the network cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which is handy because it saves having to run data and power cable to devices and one power adaptor can be used to power a number of devices.

Power over Ethernet (PoE)

To save having to install separate power cabling power can be injected into a Cat 5 or 6 Network cable as well as the data also known as Ethernet cable. How this works is network cable has four pairs of wires, only two pairs are used for data and the other two are spare so PoE uses the spares to supply power to the device but not all PoE is the same, the common PoE is call Standard PoE that is actually 48V and is active that is if you plug a device in that does require 48V power it isn't supplied, this prevents devices that use 12V or 24V PoE from having 48V feed to them, which wouldn't be good. The other type of PoE is Passive PoE that has power on it all the time and is generally 24V or 12V. Many devices these days still use 24V Passive PoE.

Devices that provide PoE include include Injectors and Switches. An Injector either plugs into a power outlet and has one PoE Port the connects to a device that supports PoE and a second Port that connects to a router. Some Injectors have a power input too where a power adaptor plugs in or some other source of DC power is used. PoE Switches work much the same but have 4 or more PoE ports and connect the data together so work like a network splitter box and power board.

Standard 48V PoE Power Adaptor/InjectorFor powering single IP Intercoms, cameras or other devices through a Cat 5 network cable using standard 48V PoE. This injector plugs into a power outlet a network cable is plugged into it from a router and the second cable to the device to be powered. Won't work with Passive 24V or 12V devices.each $35.70 READ MORE6 Port Standard 48V PoE SwitchHas 4 x Standard 48V PoE ports and 2 x Normal ports. Each PoE port will supply up to 30 Watts, Al PoE ports can supply 60 Watts total. Includes a 48V Power adaptor. Will work with any brand of IP Intercom, IP Camera or other devices that support standard 48V PoE.each $81.68 READ MOREDahua 6 Port 24V PoE SwitchHas 6 x Passive 24V PoE Ports and 1 normal Port. Each port can supply up to 45 Watts but all Ports must not draw more than 45Wattas. Includes a 24V 45 Watt power adaptor. Will work with any brand of IP Intercom, IP Camera or other device that supports 24V Passive PoE.each $80.32 READ MOREHikvision 4 Port PoE SwitchHas 4 x Standard 48V PoE Ports and 1 normal Port. Each PoE Port will supply up to 30 Watts totalling no more than 60 Watts. Includes a 48V 60Watt power adaptor. Will work with any brand of IP Intercom, IP Camera or other device that supports standard 48V PoE. If ordering Hikvision devices choosing this PoE Switch will save on freighting because it comes from the same supplier.each $94.71 READ MORE 12VDC to 24V Passive PoE Adaptor.Includes a 12VDC to 24VDC converter that provides a stable 24V 15W output from a 9.2VDC to 18VDC source, which is the voltage from 12V gate motors and solar systems. This voltage is fed to a PoE Injector Module for powering 24V Passive PoE devices from 12VDC. Ideal for devices that don't have a 12V or 24V power input.each $45.29 READ MORE24VDC to 24VDC Passive PoE AdaptorIncludes a 24VDC regulator that provides a stable 24VDC 72W output from a 25.2VDC to 40VDC source, which is the voltage that comes from a 24V gate motors and solar systems. This voltage is fed into a PoE Injector Module for powering 24V Passive PoE Devices from 24VDC. Ideal for devices that don't have a 24V power input.each $36.30 READ MORE

Outdoor WiFi Access Points and 4G Gateways.

When it is not feasible to install Cat 5 or 6 cabling outdoors an outdoor access point can connect to a WiFi Router allowing all IP Intercoms, IP Camera or other devices to be connected to a router outdoors wirelessly. These will work up to 500m with a single device or if two devices are used pointing at each other a WiFi link up to 15km is possible. These dives can also connect directly to a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) if available and WiFi isn't available.

If installing WiFi is also not feasible then a 4G Gateway can be also be used to connect an IP Intercom, IP Camera or other device directly to the Internet using the 4G LTE Mobile phone network. The IP Intercom or Camera must work over the internet without any other supporting equipment such as monitors or network video recorders (NVRs). Generally IP Intercoms that call a mobile with out a monitor will work with a 4G Gateway making the intercom into a 4G Intercom effectively.

2.4Ghz Outdoor WiFi Access PointFor connecting an IP Intercom or Camera to a Router using WiFi. Will work up to 500m open air or a pair of these can work up to 5km in open air.
