Locking the Gate

If a swing gate is less than 2.5m wide then generally the motor will hold it well enough to lock the gate. Any wider than 2.5m and the flex in the frame will allow the very end of the gate to be pushed open a little, maybe even enough for someone to squeeze through so a magnetic electric lock is recommended.

Maintenance Requirements

Piston worm drive motors do need a little maintenance, the shiny tube that slides in and out needs to be kept clean and lubricated every six months or so. If it starts making a squeaking sound, starts running slow or stops short between maintenance periods then they will need to be more often. Cleaning is done with a clean rag and the tube sprayed with some silicon lubricant or penetrating oil such as WD40 to lubricate. This would normally only happen if the motor is down low near a gravel driveway or is near some other contaminants. Operate the gate a couple of times to get the lubricant to penetrate the seal. The motor should run quietly. Also check the manual release works, if not the motor will need to be taken apart and the manual release components cleaned and lubricated, which may happen after a few years use.

The control box should also be checked for ants or other small vermin inside. Ants and any droppings should be cleaned out, holes where they could get in sealed up with silicon sealer and repellent placed in or around the control box.

The battery needs regular checking. Using a multi-meter check the voltage on the battery as the gate is being opened and closed. The voltage should hold above 12.5V on the battery if the battery is in good condition. If the battery drops below 12V during any stage of the gate movement then it needs replacing.

Mounting Brackets.

Because swing gates vary quite a bit there is no "one bracket that fits all" for installing the motor, even the so called 'adjustable' brackets that are available with some motors that 'require no welding' don't fit the gate all that well most of the time and don't look too good either. The King Linear 500 from the factory comes with pre-made mounting brackets, although the post mounting bracket will work properly only with gates set close to the back of a wide brick or concrete block post with the intention that the installer can modify them as needed to suit a particular gate.

We at Grant's Automation understand that this is a little too much to ask the average installer as the setup of the mounting brackets isn't all that straight forward, let alone having to weld them together, so we have come up with some standard designs that will work with the most common gate layouts found in Australia and New Zealand. These designs can be found in the listings of parts that come with each worm drive swing gate motor kit. You can either choose one of these bracket options with the motor order and it will be welded up for you, zinc plated and be included with the motor ready to bolt or screw on and will just work, although this may add a week or so to the delivery time OR you can not include these brackets in the order and you will get the tongues only so you can make your own brackets straight away and the way you want. Grant's Automation's Mounting bracket designs are copyrighted so you cannot make these without written permission from Grant's Automation.

If you can't find a set of brackets that suits your gate then feel free to send us an enquiry as we can quote for the custom design and manufacture of mounting brackets specifically for your gate with details supplied by you. All brackets are welded, dressed and zinc plated so they won't rust and will look nice. With 30 years experience installing gate motors and using the latest 3D computer design tools, the brackets we design are tested with a virtual simulation of a gate in a computer before anything is made, so the installer can be rest assured that the brackets will get the best performance out of the motor and make it last as long as possible. We know more about fitting gate motors than the manufacturers because we've installed gazillions of them over the years and are fussy about they way they work.

Power Options

The V-Series Control Box plugs into a normal 240V power point at the gate or your electrician can hard wire it to mains power. If getting 240V mains power to your gate is difficult there is a low voltage power option available so you can plug it in at the house (or where ever a power point is available) and run a low voltage cable out to the gate. You can install low voltage cable yourself, you don't need to be a registered electrician.

Features:

Easy programming using an intuitive LCD display designed for the DIY installer in mind.

Adjustable Maximum Motor Speed different speeds for open and close direction. Ideal when there is a lot of users having the gate opening as fast as possible but closing more slowly for increased safety and reduced wear and tear.

Adjustable Soft Start and Stop can be set separately to get the smoothest start and stop

Advanced Obstruction detection that can be adjusted to 6 levels of sensitivity. The action once an obstruction is detected can be set to either stop and reverse when next activated or stop and reverse straight away. Can be set differently for open and close, which is handy for rising gates. A collision counter prevents multiple obstructions occurring one after another so the gate won't keep reversing back and forth for ever.

Motor Encoder is used for detecting the distance the gate is travelled accurately allowing a safer margin at the end of travel between when the end is reached or obstruction's detected.

Optional Close after a time delay (Auto-close) adjustable from 1s to 255s with override in case you're having a party or want to back a trailer out and don't want the gate closing on you.

Condominium Mode - prevents remote controls from closing the gate, which is for when there are many users because if more than one user is trying to open the gate at the same time one could open and the other start closing it without realising it so if it can open only then there is no confusion. Must be used with auto-close.

Safety Photocell (Photo Electric Beam) facility to prevent the gate closing or opening on a vehicle.  Has the option to allow the photocell to control the closing of the gate once a vehicle has passed through.

... more about Safety Photocells

Three modes of operation including:

  • Standard - while gate is opening, pressing the remote control will stop it part way, pressing again will close it.
  • Condominium - remote control or other access control device opens gate only with auto-close delay or photocell control
  • Reverse - while gate is opening, pressing the remote control will reverse it to close, not stop part way.

Adjustable Leaf Delay - for double gates a delay between the opening and closing of each leaf (side) is necessary for safety and when an overlapping stop is used between the gates and if the driveway is at an angle it is useful to be able to adjust the delay longer to make sure the correct gate closes first and opens last.  The delay can be set from zero to half the opening distance.

Adjustable Pre-flash Delay - allowing a warning light to flash before the gate starts moving as a safety feature when there are a lot of pedestrians near the gate.

Pedestrian opening facility opens one side part way to let people on foot in not any vehicles and closes automatically after a delay.  The amount it opens, a pre-flash delay and auto-close delay are all adjustable.

Electric Lock Output is fully adjustable - can be set for electric strike or magnetic lock, either DC or AC, a delay can be set before the gate starts moving to make sure a strike lock is released and the time the lock is activated is also adjustable.

Courtesy light - that comes on when ever the gate is opened or can be controlled by press button input or remote control.  Time the light remains on is adjustable from four seconds to 10 hours.  Can also be used as a warning light either steady or flashing for a pre-flash delay before gate starts moving and while it is moving.

Tamper Alarm - if the lid is pried off the control box or a photocell has is light beam broken for more than a pre-set time an alarm is sounded.

Status Indicators on the lid of the control box visible form the outside indicating open/close status as well as the status of the photocells, obstruction detection and alarms.

Holiday lockout mode to prevent anyone using the gate while you're away.

Up to 64 Remote control buttons can be programmed to open/close the gate fully, pedestrian gate opening, activate holiday lockout or control courtesy light.

Remote controls can be removed even if lost or stolen ideal for managing remote controls when there is a lot of users.

Remote controls can be added without taking the lid off the control box using an administrators remote control so not just anyone can do this, allowing efficient management of remote controls when there is a lot of users.

How this operator kit compares to others?

The thing that stands out most with Centsys Vantage is its easy programming with the intuitive LCD and the versatility of the linear piston worm drive.  The linear piston worm drive configuration of this motor is more difficult to install than an articulated arm motor because positioning the motor relative to the hinge centre is more critical.  The post mounting bracket comes in two parts making it easier to directly weld to a steel post or weld to the base plate in the correct position for a brick or concrete post. The Gate Mounting Bracket bolts directly to the gate. Grant's Automation can take care of the fabrication of the post mounting bracket for you making things a lot simpler and the plus side to this is the motor will fit into tighter space if the gate opens up against a fence or wall than the articulated arm motor that requires significantly more space. The piston variety allows a greater offset of the motor position relative to the gate hinge reducing the need for an electric lock and will fit into the smallest amount of space behind the gate when opening against a fence or wall.

Centsys operators differ from King and other Italian brands in that they run off a battery rather than off a transformer so the low voltage option requires a trickle charge only from the house or where ever it is plugged in so the cable can be light duty and battery backup is standard. The downside is the battery needs to be replaced every 3 to 5 years but is something you can do yourself.

The only other differences are the Centsys Operators use an encoder for setting the slow down point for the soft start, which is much more accurate than the King Operators that use a time base.
